Beverly Cottman tells stories to children and adults in venues as varied as birthday parties, library story-times and business conference retreats. Auntie Beverly uses tales from the African Diaspora
to impart knowledge, cultural history and teach positive values. These tales allow her to educate listeners about African and African American history and culture as well as encourage them to create their own stories. Beverly establishes a learning environment in which students gain self confidence as they explore their own creativity using voice and movement.
Workshop Description
In a workshop with Auntie Beverly, participants will create and perform stories, poems and songs based on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The choral work Peaceful Warrior by Dr. Billy Taylor and Martin
Luther King: A Story Poem by Charlotte Blake Alston will serve as principal sources of inspiration for student work. Participants will learn storytelling techniques and create a storytelling narrative based on the themes of peace, nonviolence, faith and community.
