MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (August 9, 2006) — VocalEssence will present Ghost Songs & Stories, a Halloween-themed special event featuring Garrison Keillor and the VocalEssence Chorus and Ensemble Singers, on Sunday, October 29, 2006 (4:00 pm) at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. For tickets and information, call 612-376-5656 (1-800-292-4141) or visit www.vocalessence.org.
Scary tales, a signature monologue and spirited sing-alongs will make this family-friendly Halloween concert a treat for all. Along with storyteller Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion talents Tim Russell, Sue Scott, Tom Keith and Rich Dworsky will join the VocalEssence Chorus and Ensemble Singers and conductor Philip Brunelle for skits amplified by eerie sound effects and voice-over magic. Familiar music on spooky themes will be re-invented with new lyrics by Garrison Keillor.
On a more serious note, the concert will include a premiere by British composer Judith Bingham, Ghost Towns of the American West. This work was commissioned in 2004 by The Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University. They selected Judith Bingham as the winner of the 2004 Barlow Prize to compose a new work for a cappella choir that will be premiered by a consortium of three renowned choirs-the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers in Minneapolis, the BBC Singers in London and the University of Utah Singers in Salt Lake City.
Ghost Songs & Stories is a benefit for VocalEssence Community Engagement Programs that serve schoolchildren, college students, adults, singers and composers. A limited number of tickets priced at $100 each ($55 tax-deductible) include VIP seating and a private post-concert reception with the artists.
