HISTORY OF ENGAGEMENT WITH SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITY
VocalEssence has been working with the Spanish-speaking community for the past 13 years. In 2008, we established an advisory council made up of local Latino leaders to help us create a Mexican composer-in-residence program for Twin Cities schools. The program called ¡Cantaré! has been thriving since that time. More than 20 composers have traveled from Mexico to work with more than 60 schools. Composers share their culture with the students and write new music specifically for each school. The students would then perform the music for their family and friends at The Ordway in St. Paul.
In 2018, VocalEssence created a Family Series to engage more with families with young children. A priority audience for the series was Spanish-speaking families. We began our partnership with MLatino Media to assist us with connecting with the Spanish-speaking community.
In 2020, VocalEssence raised money to hire a marketing intern for eight months to assist with marketing our programs to Spanish-speaking families.
