• Sir James MacMillan is a world-renowned Scottish composer and conductor. His deep Catholic faith as well as influences from his Scottish heritage and Celtic folk music are reflected in his compositions.

• MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross, commissioned by BBC Television and screened as seven episodes during Holy Week 1994, uses all four gospels to create the last seven words—or more accurately, phrases—spoken by Christ. The piece uses the orchestra, singers, and silence to powerfully portray the final moments of Christ.

• The Sun Danced was written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fátima, Portugal on October 13, 2017. The text of the piece is based on the messages an apparition of Mary, known as Our Lady of Fátima, spoke to three Portuguese shepherd children over the course of several months that concluded in a miracle on October 13, 1917 where the sun appeared to dance, come closer to earth, and change colors in the sky.
