Students from six Twin Cities high schools gathered on Monday, November 16 at Southwest High School in Minneapolis for their first rehearsal with VocalEssence Associate Conductor G. Phillip Shoultz, III to prepare for their performance with VocalEssence and the Morehouse College Glee Club for the WITNESS concerts in February 2016.
Students learned five songs, rehearsed together and created improvisational songs. The floor in the auditorium vibrated with sound as they sang Grieg’s “Brothers, Sing On” (shown in the video above, after rehearsing together for only an hour), a staple for men’s choirs and an important song for the Morehouse College Glee Club. They’ll rehearse together again in January, with Glee Club conductor David Morrow who will be in the Twin Cities again to work with our school and community partners.
There are seven schools participating in the 200-Voice High School Male Chorus:
Central High School, Saint Paul
Edison High School, Minneapolis
North High School, Minneapolis
Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis
South High School, Minneapolis
Southwest High School, Minneapolis
Washburn High School, Minneapolis
