Concert Program

• Though written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, the music of Kristina doesn’t have the 1970s pop feel, but instead features gorgeous melodies, Swedish folk songs, and a full, lush orchestra.

• Swedish writer Vilhelm Moberg stayed in Chisago County for a year in 1948 and collected stories from Swedes living in the area. Kristina and Karl Oskar were created from these stories.

• There is a statue of Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson located in Lindström, MN. Karl Oskar is looking forward, while Kristina is looking backward towards her homeland, Sweden. The Minnesota version of the statue is a replica of the original located in Karlshamn, Sweden.

• VocalEssence performed the North American premiere of the concert version of Kristina with the principal soloists from the Swedish cast on October 12, 1996, at Orchestra Hall to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Swedish emigration to Minnesota. There was a second performance in Lindström, Minnesota, near the setting of the musical.
