Concert: Urban Choir Festival
Nov 22 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join us for an evening of choral music. Urban Choir Festival participants and Prairie Fire Choir will perform A Vision Unfolding with music by Kyle Pederson and text by Shanelle Gabriel. The combined forces of See Change Treble Choir, Minnesota Valley Women’s Chorale, and Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus will perform EveryBODY, by Kyle Pederson, Melissa Dunphy, Sharon Udoh, Britney Boykin, and Gerald Gurss.
A Vision Unfolding centers around themes of social justice—inviting the choir and audience into a compelling vision of a world rooted in compassion, freedom, inclusivity and justice. The piece invites the listener to reach out and build bridges of care and connection, that we might find a better way of being in community. That we might stand in solidarity with those whose voices are too often dismissed, regardless of their skin color, sexual orientation, faith background, or other characteristic. That we might not dismiss, disdain, and judge those whose politics are different from ours, but that we might make the uncomfortable effort to see them as people just as worthy of respect and dignity.
EveryBODY is an anthological choral cycle about body image. Not one person goes through their day untouched by this issue. For some, we look in the mirror and have a tough reality about our age, for some, embarrassing scars from a life figured out the hard way, and for others, living with consequences of a nonwhite skin tone. This work tells powerful stories through various musical style such as the blues and doo-wop, and the stories are told through a broad emotional scope—from tears to comedy.
