Moses Hogan
1957-2003
Moses Hogan was a leading arranger of African-American spirituals, as well as a talented pianist and conductor. Beginning at an early age, Hogan studied piano and was immersed in the musical traditions of the African American Baptist church. He studied at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Oberlin College, and The Juilliard School. As an accomplished conductor, he founded and directed the New World Ensemble, the Moses Hogan Chorale, and the Moses Hogan Singers. After publishing his first acclaimed arrangement, Elijah Rock, Hogan published 80 choral arrangements and eight solo voice arrangements. He was highly influential to today’s arrangers of spirituals and his music is performed around the world.
