“We are thrilled to be bringing this legendary choir, founded 800 years ago, a living expression of the timeless power of vocal performance, to the Midwest for the very first time,” says VocalEssence founder and artistic director Philip Brunelle. “At VocalEssence, our efforts to extend the practice of singing together to every corner of our community nurtures our own legacy so, we offer a perfect union of performer and venue–the Montserrat Boy Choir at the breathtaking Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis.”
The Montserrat Boy Choir, made up of boys ranging in age from 9 to 14 who attend the Escolania de Montserrat, is one of the oldest music schools in Spain. They are the official choir of the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat in Catalonia, perched atop a mountain near Barcelona. The choir boasts a diverse repertoire worthy of their eight centuries of tradition. Works range from Gregorian chant and music of the Spanish baroque to more contemporary pieces by former Music Director Bernat Vivancos and pioneering music educator Zoltan Kodály.
The Montserrat Boy Choir concert is at 7:30 pm on November 11, at Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. Tickets, priced between $25 and $45, are available online now. For season tickets, details about the season, individual tickets and other information, please visit www.vocalessence.org.
