DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Don Shelby Teams with VocalEssence on Stage and on Board

donDon Shelby has been involved “one way or another” with VocalEssence for the past 25 years, since he first appeared in a production of “Of Thee I Sing.” Now Don is on the board of VocalEssence, and the award-winning former news reporter and anchor has taken on other roles as well. “I’ve played the role of Paul Bunyan in the VocalEssence production of the operetta by the same name,” Don says, and he continues his portrayal of Mark Twain on the River Songs and Tales with Mark Twain: Northern Minnesota Tour.

When asked about his favorite VocalEssence experience, Don is hard pressed to narrow it down to one. “Every experience, as an audience member, of any production by VocalEssence is worthy of indelible memory. The Christmas programs, the WITNESS programs and the special productions have been my favorite experiences.”

Musical beginnings: Encouragement and education
Don credits a high school choir teacher with influencing his eventual career choice: “She believed in me, even though she knew I couldn’t sing a note of harmony. She was the one who pushed me to be on stage, which—in essence—is what television really is.”

His college years were spent at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. “We opened the world-famous Corbett Center for the Performing Arts on campus with a production of Alexander Borodin’s opera Prince Igor. Wonderful artists from the Metropolitan Opera, a huge chorus and wonderful dancers under the direction of the Met’s director Frank Corsaro … made a life-long impression on me and kept me involved in musical theater and choral music from then on.”

Power through teamwork
“Choral music is not only beautiful, but represents to me something basic in my understanding of how we work best in society—by being a team, reliant on one another—where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” shares Don, who led his high school basketball team to a county championship, and who has coached his daughters’ teams for years.

That VocalEssence “feeds on its own high standards” makes it unique among performing arts organization, Don says. The auditioning process is rigorous, with only the most qualified singers making the cut, he says, and the leadership, direction and training provided by VocalEssence Artistic Director and Founder Philip Brunelle and his staff ensure quality. “There is wonderful discipline in this performance. VocalEssence provides a wonderful program of music, but the wonder of the performance is the result of pinpoint direction and exacting standards.”

‘A community treasure’
Beyond the technical excellence and exceptional talent at VocalEssence, Don finds “wonderful, transformative events, inspired and elevating performances” from an organization whose “music has the capacity to inform, educate and inspire us in a way no other music or art can universally accomplish.”

Citing his involvement with Lost Twin Cities, a Twin Cities Public Television series, Don says, “I support VocalEssence because it is a community treasure. Without the support of the community, treasures like VocalEssence can be lost to us.”

October is Veterans’ Voices Month, as proclaimed by the Minnesota Legislature in 2014, and VocalEssence will open our 47th Season on October 11 with Dreams of the Fallen, a tribute to U.S. military Veterans. Jake Runestad, whose monumental work with Iraq war Veteran and poet Brian Turner provides the centerpiece and title for the concert, issues this video invitation to join us for the Midwest premiere of Dreams of the Fallen at The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University.

Fans of large chorus and orchestra will be moved as the VocalEssence Chorus & Ensemble Singers perform together with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra on rousing and uplifting pieces including Howard Hanson’s “Song of Democracy.” Also featuring internationally renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel and soprano Maria Jette, the concert will bring hope and healing to the soldier’s experience through beautiful and mystical music including Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Vaughan Williams’s Toward the Unknown Region, Joseph Canteloube’s wonderfully expressive “Songs of a Shepherd,” and “Controlled Burn” by Jocelyn Hagen and Dessa.

For a preview, listen to excerpts, watch a video, or read a review of the 2013 premiere of Dreams of the Fallen by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Chorus of New Orleans, and Jeffrey Biegel. You can also read a profile of Jake in the Star Tribune, hear VocalEssence Artistic Director Philip Brunelle chat about the concert on the WCCO Morning News with Dave Lee, and watch VocalEssence perform “Controlled Burn.”

The VocalEssence Chorus is an exceptional group of 90 talented, committed singers from many walks of life—doctors, lawyers, nurses, educators, homemakers, business people and others—most with college-level or higher training in classical music and voice. Our 32-voice professional choir, the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers, is known as one of Minnesota’s most highly trained and experienced group of singers.

Here is a peek at one of the singers you will see and hear at the next VocalEssence concert:

Robert C. Smith
Ensemble Singer, bass, with VocalEssence for 20 years

Occupation: Professor at St. Olaf College

What’s currently on your playlist?
“Truthfully, I am kind of a snob about fidelity, so I prefer listening to actual CDs (or even LPs) as opposed to lower-quality compressed files. I do have a playlist for less serious listening, like the gym, however. That currently includes Roberta Gambarini, Susan Graham, Silk Road Ensemble, Jerry Douglas, Sixth Wave, New York Polyphony, Lorraine Hunt, Eva Cassidy, Elly Ameling, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Agnes Baltsa.”

Which VocalEssence performance are you most looking forward to this season?
“It is a great season, so everything interests me, truthfully. Having said that, I am particularly excited about the ‘unknown,’ i.e. Jake Runestad’s new piece, Dreams of the Fallen. Jake is such a fine composer and a terrific guy. I can’t wait to dig into his music.”

VocalEssence Rocks TCF with the Rolling Stones

VocalEssence performed with the Rolling Stones on stage during their one-night-only performance June 3 at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, a stop on the 15-city North American ZIP CODE Tour. VocalEssence Artistic Director and Founder Philip Brunelle and Associate Conductor Phillip Shoultz both conducted.

“It was an amazing experience,” Philip Brunelle told MPR News, when 24 VocalEssence singers “joined the Stones for a gorgeous ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ that ended with a gospel flourish,” as described in a St. Paul Pioneer Press review.

When asked during a MinnPost interview whether the time onstage with the Stones was long or short, Philip Brunelle replied, “It was a short eight minutes. Oh, my word! To get out there in front of 50,000 people! You’ve seen pictures of everyone up on their feet and waving. It was amazing!

“But the thing that was especially heartwarming for me was they wanted a choir there. [Before last night], some people in the audience might have thought that choir was only something to hear in church or in a high school concert,” Philip said. “The great thing about choral music is, if you’re a flexible group like VocalEssence, you can do all kinds of things. This was just one of them.”

Youthful Excellence: Francisco J. Núñez and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City® Will Engage Twin Cities on Many Levels

You may have seen them on national television—“From the Top at Carnegie Hall,” NBC’s Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting, and “Good Morning America” for starters. And their founder and conductor, MacArthur “genius” Fellow Francisco J. Núñez, was recently profiled on Fox & Friends and interviewed on a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Art Works Media podcast. But on November 22 you can enjoy the energy and excitement, movement and musicality of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City® (YPC) here in the Twin Cities, sponsored by Travelers.

YPC is a multicultural youth chorus renowned for its superb sound and electrifying performances. Frequent performers at Carnegie Hall, YPC has performed with such guest artists as Joshua Bell, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, and NEA Jazz Master Delfeayo Marsalis. From classical to gospel, pop and world music, they perform with an energy that leaps from the stage. VocalEssence Presents: Young People’s Chorus of New York City® will be a rich program that includes some local influences—pieces by Stephen Paulus, Dominick Argento, and an arrangement by Timothy C. Takach, a VocalEssence board member—along with traditional songs, spirituals and popular selections. You can hear YPC performing “Rikitikitavi” and check out videos of YPC performing “Vere Languores Nostros” and “Take This Hammer.”

The concert is on Saturday, November 22 at 8 pm, Roseville Lutheran Church, with a Pre-Concert Conversation at 7 pm with conductor Francisco J. Núñez. Tickets are on sale now.

Education and engagement

When Francisco and the YPC arrive in the Twin Cities on November 20, they will hop right on a bus to work with select Saint Paul high schools. Over 200 students from three schools—Central High School, Como Park Senior High School, and Johnson Senior High School—will participate. They will share music, as the choirs sing for each other with Francisco at the helm, demonstrating new ways to interpret the music and teaching new music to the singers. VocalEssence is grateful for Travelers’ sponsorship of this activity, as well as the tickets they have provided for the YPC concert for participating students and their families.

YPC and Francisco will also work with choirs at Roseville High School, whose families will provide lodging for the YPC singers. “I had the opportunity to sing under Francisco Núñez at the 2007 National ACDA Multicultural Honor Choir, and I know what a gifted and passionate conductor he is,” said Roseville High School choir director Jami Lercher. “I am thrilled to bring his expertise and enthusiasm to our students at Roseville!”

YPC’s adventures will continue through Sunday, November 23, with other organizations in the Twin Cities, including a recording for “Performance Today” at Minnesota Public Radio, an American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota Fall Conference presentation, and a performance at the 10:30 am worship service at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. Thank you to Francisco, YPC and Travelers for bringing this energetic music education and engagement to the Twin Cities.
